Winnie

Four-year-old female Cavalier King Charles spaniel

Winnie was used as a breeding female in a Pennsylvania puppy mill. She was relinquished to a rescue at four years old after having at least eight litters. Winnie had no idea what beds, toys, or grass were. Winnie’s family took every new step slowly and patiently. They found great joy in the first time she lay in a bed and the first time she actually played with a toy. All of these moments added up and changed her from a terrified puppy mill survivor to a beloved family member.

Buster

Eleven-and-a-half-year-old male mixed breed

Buster was one of countless animals who suffered along with their people during the pandemic. Buster’s owner was sick, and Buster had been neglected to the point that he was emaciated, had a severe limp, and was flea infested. He was surrendered to a city shelter in the middle of the pandemic. Buster was adopted out in March 2021 as a “medical/hospice adoption,” meaning that the home had full knowledge he would require a lot of medical care and might not have much time left. He still limps but is happy and loved.

Major Walter Von Burger

Male pit bull

Walter was found as a stray in a Mississippi county where there is a pit bull ban and any pit bull who is picked up cannot be put up for adoption but is instead immediately euthanized. Someone at the county shelter saw how special this pittie was, and he was transferred to Rhode Island. There, a local animal behaviorist was grieving the loss of her beloved dog. As soon as Major arrived, she found herself meeting up with friends so that Major could have play dates. Major “found” his person at just the right time, and brought her out of her grief and back to life.

Slade

Two-year-old male Siberian husky

Slade was born in a puppy mill in Pennsylvania but remained unsold. Slade lives as a permanent hospice foster in a home full of dogs. When another dog is sick, he will stay by their side till they are back to “normal.” Most puppy mill dogs suffer from a lack of socialization, but Slade’s behavior was more severe. He still only really trusts his mom, who he likes to climb into bed with and “talk” to before they go to sleep. He is cherished and will live out the rest of his life with his loving family.

Mia

Thirteen-week-old female Boston terrier

Mia was eleven weeks old and weighed three-and-a-half pounds when she was surrendered. She was blind in both eyes from untreated infections. Mia was put in foster care with a shelter volunteer and her wife. At first, she was small enough to fit in her foster mom’s hand. But despite Mia’s many health problems and her tiny stature, she was fearless. She faced down the foster family’s three cats and three pit bulls with the bravery of a dog ten times her size. She grew out of her heart murmur and was able to be spayed. Mia was adopted by her foster family and now runs the house.

Riley

One-and-a-half-year-old female mixed breed

Riley’s dad was in tears as he stood in the lobby of the shelter. A veteran who had served in Afghanistan, he suffered from mental health issues and was going into a yearlong inpatient hospital program. He couldn’t bring Riley with him. Fortunately, the director of the shelter overheard the conversation and got involved. Luckily, they found a young couple eager to take Riley on. The foster family readily share photos and information to pass along to Riley’s dad. He is extremely grateful that the shelter was able to offer this solution so that he did not have to give up Riley. He and the shelter staff are looking forward to his reunion with Riley once the program ends.
